We all have landscapes of escape, even if only metaphorically, places that we associate with peace, freedom, happiness. Often these spaces are places we have been to whilst on holiday, a physical, mental and spiritual escape from our daily lives.
The return of a memory, or an emotion is very powerful… none more so than the memory of holiday, sanctuary and retreat and the emotions they conjure up for us.
Our dreams and visions of the tropics, lands like Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, and the Caribbean are almost always silhouetted by coconut palms.
The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is often said to be the most useful plant in the world. In fact, throughout Oceania, it is commonly called “the tree of life.” This ‘tree of life’ can protect, heal, provide coconut water, and feed.
By creating fictional tropical spaces which represent escape, dream, pleasure, I hope to provoke these feelings of peace and happiness via this art collection.
This project is not my travel diary, this project is about escapism, fantasy and dreams.
